Caraval by Stephanie Garber

"Remember, its only a game."  One epic mind-bending adventure roller coaster ride of a game is more like it!  Caraval is the best book of 2017.  I am just so incredibly sad that it took me a full year before I actually read it.  As you read Caraval, you must remember that nothing is as it seems.  Do not trust anything you see, because looks can be deceiving.

With this in mind, I will say that the beginning appeared to drag on for a brief time. Once Scarlett gets to 'Isla de los SueƱos' also known as 'The Isle of Dreams' and enters Caraval, the plot starts to pick up. Please, do not get me wrong, the intro is quite important and should not be overlooked.  And I truly enjoyed learning about Scarlett and Tella's backstory, but the anticipation was almost too much for me to bear.

As the plot gains speed, it took all I could to keep up with Scarlett as she played Master Legend’s wickedly genius charade. Throughout the book, I felt like a player in the mad game, and had to constantly remind myself that none of it was real (just like Scarlett).  This novel left me breathless by the time I reached the final chapter.  I have not been so captivated by a book since J.K. Rowling's amazing Harry Potter series.

I would be lying if I said that there were multiple times I wondered if Stephanie Garber actually had a complete storyline planned, because I assumed that she just kept writing without a thought to how each scene would effect the plot. It was not until the final few chapters that I realized what a mad genius Garber actually is. Most books that I have read, I have been able to predict the outcome but I was honestly blindsided by the events that unfolded before my eyes.

Overall, I would say that Caraval is a must read for those who enjoy a good young adult fantasy novel.  If you liked The Night Circus, then prepare to be amazed by its fantastically outrageous sister.  Stephanie Garber is a fabulous author!  I predict a long and prosperous future from her and I look forward to buying all of her books in the future.
