Reach for the Stars by Kathy Jay

This book is advertised as 'a feel good, uplifting romantic comedy' but what I read seemed to have a lot of romance and very little comedy.  I picked up on more of a dramatic vibe than comedic.  Although the story-line was generally pleasing, I have some concerns.

In this novel, Layla is a fiery redhead who's boyfriend of twelve years, Joe, has decided that they should travel the world together.  On the eve of their departure, Layla's mother is in an accident that left her clinging to life.  After spending most of the night in the hospital with her mom, Layla returns home to find Joe's absence and a note saying that he had left for adventure without her.  Not only that, but that they should secretly take a 'temporary' break until he got back.  Kind of a sleazeball if you ask me, but I digress.

Then there is Nick, the star of a teen vampire show, along with his twin brother, Alex.  The pair have always been known as the hot 'it guys' of Hollywood.  Unlike his happily married and new father of a brother, Nick has a reputation for being a player.  Then one day, an ex from the past drops a major bombshell on Nick that causes him to rethink all of his decisions over the past decade.

After life seems to throw mountains of bad luck their way, Layla and Nick find comfort in arms of one another.  The two embark on a hot and heavy whirlwind of a romance that satisfies both of their needs for intimacy.  But when secrets come out and their romance is tested, the only question that remains is if their passionate flame will last or fizzle out like an extinguished candle.

Kathy Jay did a great job of getting me hooked on the story at the start.  The prologue was packed with so much dramatic friction, I could not help but read on.  However, as the plot unfolded, the intensity of it declined and became somewhat predictable.  Do not get me wrong, this is 'a feel good' book, as advertised.  I like how Layla and Nick fit together, but that still does not excuse the lacking components.
